  12. Description:

  14. WinClock is a utility that displays useful information in the caption
  15. bar of the active window.  This approach is somewhat less obtrusive
  16. than having the information in a window which is always on top or
  17. that can be covered by other windows.

  20. System Requirements:

  22. WinClock is completely self-contained and is compatable with both
  23. Windows 3.0 and Windows 3.1.  WinClock uses very little memory (less
  24. than 30k) and uses very few resources.

  27. Installation:

  29. Since you are reading this, I assume that you have unzipped the WinClock
  30. archive.  The rest of the installation is very easy.  Create a new program
  31. manager item for WinClock.  Make sure CLOCKDLL.DLL is in the working
  32. directory or put it in your Windows directory.  Double-click to start
  33. WinClock.  I prefer to add the program item to the Startup group in
  34. Windows 3.1.  This causes WinClock to launch every time I start Windows.

  37. Instructions:
  38.  
  39. Once WinClock is running, information will appear in the caption bar of the
  40. active window.  Initially, WinClock displays the date on the left of the bar
  41. and the time on the right.  A short click on either the time or the date will
  42. toggle the display of free memory.  Another short click will display the
  43. percentage of free resources available.  One more click will display the
  44. disk space available on drive C.  Click and hold the mouse button to display
  45. a menu.  The menu commands are as follows:

  47. Setup...
  48.     The setup dialog is used to specify how the information is displayed.
  49.     The large group of radio buttons is used to control where each of
  50.     the items appears.  An item can either appear on the left or right
  51.     of the caption bar or it can be toggled into view.  If more than one
  52.     item is specified for the left or right, they are combined and
  53.     displayed together.  If more than one item is set to toggled, the
  54.     first short click displays the first toggled item, a click on this
  55.     item displays the next item, etc.  In addition, an item can be turned
  56.     off which prevents it from being displayed at any time.  (If all items
  57.     are turned off or all are set to toggle, the time will continue to
  58.     display so the menu can be accessed!)

  60.     In addition this dialog is used to set the time format and date format.
  61.     The clock can be 24-hour and optionally display seconds.  The date
  62.     format can be chosen from the set of formats displayed.

  65.     Provides the current version number and tells you where
  66.     you can reach me.

  69.     Removes WinClock and quits the application.

  72. Advanced Options:
  73.  
  74. I have added the following advanced options (translation - there is no UI
  75. to set them!) to modify the behavior of WinClock.  All of these options are
  76. controlled by adding (or changing) lines in the WinClock.INI file which
  77. can be found in your Windows directory.

  79. ShowWindow=
  80.  
  81. This determines whether the WinClock window appears if the clock cannot
  82. find a home.  By default, the window does appear and this value is set
  83. to 1.  To keep the window from appearing, change this value to a 0.

  85. SystemColors=
  86.  
  87. This determines whether WinClock uses the system colors to draw the
  88. text or a custom color that from this .INI file.  By default, WinClock
  89. uses the system colors and this value is set to 1.  To specify a custom
  90. text color, change this value to a 0 and specify the color by adding the
  91. following lines to the .INI file:
  92. TextColorR=(red component of text color)
  93. TextColorG=(green component of text color)
  94. TextColorB=(blue component of text color)

  96. EraseAlways=
  97.  
  98. This determines whether WinClock invalidates the desktop window to
  99. remove "ghost" clocks in Windows 3.0.  For machines that are running
  100. Windows 3.0, this option will eliminate the redraw that occurs when
  101. switching between applications.  By default, WinClock does invalidate
  102. and this value is set to 1.  This option has no effect if you are using
  103. Windows 3.1.

  105. LeftOffset=
  106. RightOffset=
  107.  
  108. These two values specify how much room WinClock should leave between
  109. the string it draws and the standard system controls.  These can be
  110. useful if you are using other utilities that want to put controls in
  111. the title bar.  By default, both values are set to 0.
